Abstract: Spoken English plays an increasingly important part in foreign language classes in china.  However for a long time there has been a controversy about how the teacher teaches the students to speak English. Because of the entry examination for university, or some other reasons,the teachers usually only focus on grammar.  The students can do grammar exercises very well, but they can’t speak English or communicate with the English speakers. In order to improve the students’ ability in speaking, the teachers must have a good understanding of the teaching objectives (students), and have a mastery of a variety of teaching techniques.
